How these dates are worked out
A tithi (lunar day) is each 12° step the moon moves ahead of the sun, so a lunar month has 30. A nakshatra is one of 27 star segments the moon passes through; yoga and karana are further divisions used in the almanac. Positions use the sidereal (Lahiri) zodiac.
Monthly days use the tithi at sunrise in the place you pick (New Delhi by default), in its local time. Festivals use the time of day each one keys on (Diwali in the evening, Janmashtami at midnight, Ram Navami at midday) within its lunar month; months run new moon to new moon, and leap (adhik) months are skipped.
Regional and family traditions can still move a date by a day. Default dates last calculated on .
Fasting isn't right for everyone. Read about Ekadashi before you try it.
