Time & skyVedanga, the science of light and time
Jyotisha (Hindu astrology)
Reading the sky: the birth chart and the calendar.
Try it at home
Look at today's Panchang to see the tithi and nakshatra. Treat any prediction as tradition, never as a reason for fear or a costly remedy.
Optional, as always. Adapt it to your family, region and health.
The wisdom
Jyotisha is the traditional Indian study of the sky. Its astronomy sets the Panchang's tithis, nakshatras and festival dates; its astrology reads a birth chart (kundali) of the grahas across the twelve rashis to describe a person's nature and timing in life.
At its best Jyotisha asks people to notice cycles and timing, and to act with care rather than fear.
What the evidence says
Evidence: TraditionalThe value rests on lived tradition and reasoning, not on tests.Controlled tests of astrology, including a well-known double-blind study published in Nature in 1985, have not found that birth charts predict personality or events. The astronomy behind the calendar is sound; predictions and remedies are matters of belief.
How we rate evidenceSignificance
What it means to the people who keep it. Faith-based meaning is described as belief, not as proven fact.
Jyotisha is one of the six Vedangas, the limbs of Vedic learning. Many families consult a kundali for naming, marriage matching and choosing a muhurat, while others see it as cultural tradition only.
